Art Prufer a.k.a Network_Guru

Art has been a long time SolarWinds customer and prolific community forum contributor.  In fact, he is the #1 forum contributor in SolarWinds’ history!   Other community members have often commented that posts from Art (aka Network Guru) are extremely helpful.

Here at SolarWinds we are very happy to have Art as a customer and wanted to acknowledge his contributions over the years – to the forum, beta participation, and insightful product feedback.  He may know more about SolarWinds software than SolarWinds!

Thanks Art!

Q. How long have you been in the networking industry and why did you get involved in it?
A. Relatively speaking, I'm a network Noob. As an Electrician, I started in 1991 doing Cat5 cabling and Fiber Optic splicing. After 5 years I got my feet wet configuring Xyplex Termservers and Routers, and then on to Cisco switches and routers.

I found networking to be more challenging than bending pipe and pulling wire, and it addresses my inner-geek need to measure stuff.

Q: How did you hear about SolarWinds?
A: Back in May 2002, I was doing a Google search for Network Performance management tool, and found Orion.

Q. What were the specific business problems and challenges facing your work that influenced you to use SolarWinds?
A. At that time we had just merged companies and we were still running our network 'blind' in a reactive manner, rather than the proactive.

This was to be an Interim NPM solution, until we decided final an "Enterprise NPM Solution", as it was a cost effective solution for monitoring and alerting.

Two more mergers and 5 years later we are still using Orion for NPM, as it has evolved considerably since those early days, and provides us with an "at a glance" view of our network health.

Being able to customize the web interface has added significant value to this tool for daily operations, tracking tickets, etc.

Q: Are you a member of other networking communities?
A: No, but I do frequent non work related other forums.
