I keep getting this error message when using the SolarWinds VM Monitor. The odd thing is that it works perfectly when I add it to my NPM in Solarwinds.

Sorry, the error message says TEST Failed My IP Address does not appear to be a VMWare ESX server. This is an ESX server though.

We built to support 3.5. Is it v3.5?

Could you use Wireshark to see what's going on between VM Monitor and ESX during this test?

I am getting a similar error.  However, mine states "Test Failed. No such host is known."   This is after I put in the IP address of the ESX server.  I can ping it, and I can monitor it via Orion and see all the VMs, etc.

It seems to me, this error indicates it can't communicate with the server.  I have tried VM Monitor on the Orion server itself as well as XP workstations to ensure it wasn't a communication error with the box it was installed on.

 Any ideas?

Are there any spaces before or after the ip address? What if you use a hostname instead?

If that doesn't solve it, I would recommend running Wireshark with VM Monitor to see what's going on. That will show if VM Monitor making any weird DNS lookups.

No spaces, etc.  Doesn't work with the hostname either.  Right now this is running on the same machine that is running Orion.  Orion can see all information it is supposed to.  I am not going to take the time to fix a free tool when the tool I paid for is working.  Not worth my time on the network making traffic available to Wireshark.  I will just uninstall it until it works right.
