Hello,
Any reason behind calling it VOIP monitor vs QOS/IP SLA Monitor ? I think it vague if we can use this product for monitoring the IP SLA values without having a VOIP solution. We monitoring networks for ISP's and more customers are starting to use IP Telephony from independent VOIP Providers, would be very nice to be able to monitor SLA levels, but we have absolutly no access to the VOIP parts..
My feeling is that this would work, but I'm not totally convinced.. Would like SolarWinds to create some whitepapers or something on this, I think it would sell their products more..

Thanks for the feedback. Orion VoIP Monitor is primarily targeted at companies that want to monitor their voice network or test whether their network is ready for a voice deployment. Over the next several releases, we will be expanding the functionality to not only include IP SLA monitoring but also Call Data Records gathering from various PBX vendors, Call Volume monitoring, and other customer requested features.
Customers can deploy Orion VoIP Monitor without having a voice network deployed to test response times, latency, and jitter over their WAN links. Users can specify the packet precedence in order to simulate different types of traffic. You can download the free 30 day VoIP Monitor evaluation from our website in order to test how it works on your network.
Are there additional IP SLA metrics you would like to monitor in addition to response times, latency, and jitter?
Will definitly be testing this, also doing som consulting on another company where there is an Cisco Callmgr solution.
But i guess my next question the will be, will there be an scaled down SLA monitor ? would think that would be a market for that also, I would think that you have a good market base also in the ISP market ? Or should we pay for the extra features of the VOIP monitor ? Guess that would be the preferred soultion;)
Havn't been drilling down on the IP SLA metric's yet, but Packet loss is of course a necessity. Might get back to this when looked more into the IP SLA functionality.
That's an interesting suggestion we've heard from time to time. A more generic solution is something we're thinking about, but we can't say definitively whether we're going to do something or not.
Of course, the more people express interest, the more likely it becomes.
I work in an environment where I do not have any access to the VoIP equipment as well. Because of this, I would also like to see a more generic solution centered around both IP SLA and QoS. This added information would help me more efficiently troubleshoot problems that arise and the statements I get stating "the network is slow".
I would second the comment, IP SLA has many options, including ICMP, ICMP TRACE (response time of every device along a path), FTP, HTTP, etc.
This is really good information. We have had some discussions here on how to better include IP SLA capability so I'll bring this input to these discussions.
Thanks Andy. We really would like to leverage IP SLA on our routers for other things especially icmp latency trending. Hope to see this in the next release.BB
Any updates on enhancing the functionality of this? It would be a more enticing purchase if this would be enable us to easily monitor any IP SLA measurement, not just the VoIP related ones.
Basically allow us to monitor all of the IP SLA tests.
Benefits of Cisco IOS IP SLAs •Cisco IOS IP SLAs monitoring –Provides service level agreement monitoring, measurement, and verification. •Network performance monitoring –Measures the jitter, latency, or packet loss in the network. –Provides continuous, reliable, and predictable measurements. •IP service network health assessment –Verifies that the existing QoS is sufficient for new IP services. •Edge-to-edge network availability monitoring –Provides proactive verification and connectivity testing of network resources (for example, indicates the network availability of a Network File System (NFS) server used to store business critical data from a remote site). •Troubleshooting of network operation –Provides consistent, reliable measurement that immediately identifies problems and saves troubleshooting time. •Voice over IP (VoIP) performance monitoring •Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Virtual Private Network (VPN) performance monitoring and network verification

Thanks for the input Bryan. I'll see what we can do.

Hi all,I was about to start a thread about this very subject. I need this functionality also. we need the VoIP module to be able to take over from Fluke Response Watch and similar tools. it would enable us to have everything in the one place using the NPM base.I would really appreciate a full update on where Solarwinds think they can take this, as the VoIP module has great potential as a true IP SLA probe monitor
please consider this post as another request for the above functionality....
OK friend from Belfast (sorry - couldn't bring my self to address you as the toilet). I am tracking this request and it looks like there is a lot of interest. I'll keep you updated on new functionallity.
