Some of you have asked how I added the thwack quick launch resource to http://oriondemo.solarwinds.com.  It shows you the last few posts and lets you search quickly from inside Orion, opening a new window with Thwack so you don't loose your place in Orion.  It's easy to set up, and if you like it let me know.

Setup:

  1. Log in as admin
  2. Click the "Admin" link in the tool bar
  3. Click "Manage Views"
  4. Select the view you want to add the resource to and click "Edit"
  5. Click the "+" button to add, then expand miscellaneous, check "Custom HTML or Text" and click "Submit"
  6. Go to the view you just edited, scroll to the Custom HTML resource and click the edit box in it's title bar.
  7. Set the Resource Title, (I thought "SolarWinds User Community" was just the ticket)
  8. Set the custom HMTL or text to this:

    <iframe id="thwack" src="#THWACK URL#" width=450 height=450 marginwidth=0 marginheight=0 hspace=0 vspace=0 frameborder=0 scrolling=no></iframe>

    Replacing #THWACK URL# with:

    1. http://thwack.com/orion/OrionThwackResource.aspx for new threads in the Orion forum or
    2. http://thwack.com/orion/ThwackPortal.aspx for new threads in all forums

You'll also want to adjust the width to match your column width and the height to whatever you like, 450 is my default.

  9. Click "Submit"

I've got some ideas to improve it and would love to hear your feedback.

Cheers,

Patrick

Great addition to Orion. I like being able to see updated Thwack threads without having to go online to the website.

Any possibility this is 'tweakable' such that we can pass thru authentication to your IP Monitor application? Would be sweet to have the NOC Dashboard available as a resource in Orion, but I havn't been able to get around the pesky authentication issue. :-(

What do you mean by "NOC Dashboard"?

Whoops... should have been a little more specific? :-D

Specifically the IP Monitor NOC view....

I'm currently playing with a document posted in the IP Monitor support site (https://support.ipmonitor.com/devdocs/6ff0996bbeb149fa9a1bb7e0373f6e85.aspx) around CentralStatus using a seperate .aspx page to do SOAP calls, thereby embedding a "guest" login for live status of the monitors.

I'm essentially hoping to integrate a LIVE status of our IP Monitor NOC page into a custom resource on the main Orion status page.

Sounds like you want to show ipMonitor data.  Would you want that same style of view within Orion?

Not necessarily, I'd be OK with simply embeding the logged in status page of IP Monitor (NOC View) within a custom resource on the Orion Summary Page.

ie. http://www.ipmonitor.com/network_monitoring/software/live_reporting.aspx

The custom HTML provided in the latest Solar*Ink would work great...however the IP Monitor tool requires a login to display the main status page, which i'm not sure how to get around with simple HTML. :-(

We tend to forget to check IP Monitor and focus on the Orion homepage, so I was hoping to integrate the IP Monitor status somewhat with the main Orion status screen so it's more in your face....

I think it was a problem using the thwack-light layout.  I changed to Dark and it works.

Ah.  It appears there's no thwack-light version of the widget.  Let me get the Interop booth gear in the crates this week and I'll put one together.  Good catch!
