    Managing a large network map

Hi everyone! Need some tips and ideas on how to manage a large map. The network is very big! And after a 5-6 hour discovery, the map is spagetti. How do I go about getting it into a managable map that I can print. Any ideas?

Re: Managing a large network map

Would it be possible to organize the map elements into cities, regions, states, etc to facilitate simplifying the map. For example, you could create a nested map arrangement where you have a top level map of the US that would have icons representing states or regions, then each of those icons is a map iteself that can be drilled into to reveal the network nodes underneath.

    Would that work for you?

Re: Managing a large network map

There are numerous ways to modify your map once it is created.  Some of the options are listed below:

    • Map Levels - The blue pyramid icons in the menu-bar enable you to change the view to only contain routers (level 1), routers and switches (level 2), and all devices (level 3 - current view).
    • Sub-levels - Display only nodes connected to a router by right-clicking on a router and selecting Hide Sub-Level.
    • Focus in a new window - This allows you to "drill down" on any specific router and see its connections in a completely separate map window.
    • Continuous Scan - Once a network is discovered, LANsurveyor uses additional discovery methods such as Spanning Tree to locate more devices and more accurately layout the network.  After Continous Scan runs a few times, the diagram should be laid out in a more logical manner.  You can locate Continous Scan options under Monitor > Continous Scan > Options.
    • Map Layout - Some maps may have a more logical feel with the Symmetrical or Circular layout options or by modifying the map spacing.  These options are available by clicking in the white space of a map and selecting Map Properties.

Note: Each configuration can be saved as a new map and managed independently.  You can even have each map open everytime you load LANsurveyor by adding the maps to Tools > Options > Auto-Open.

I hope these tips help you out.  If you still need more assistance, just let me know.

Re: Managing a large network map

Thanks Haley for your repsonse. I am also wondering if I use the grouping option through the repository, that this will also give me a look at each node and whats connected to it.? I am thinking if I click on a router for example, and then group all of whats connected to it, I will be able to create a seperate map that way. But I will also try to work the map with whatyou recommend. This map I am working on, includes over 200 routers, over 12,000 interfaces and about 14,000 nodes.

    Thanks for your input....

Haley, I am trying to use your suggestions,to organize this map better. I am choosing a known router with some subnets. When I focus in a new window, All I get is the router icon and nothing else. I choose show all subnets, and nothing shows up. What am I doing wrong?

The development team has been able to duplicate the issue you are seeing with viewing the router in the new window after selecting the Focus in a New Window option.  This issue appears to be related to viewing certain routers, and the dev team is currently investigating the issue further.  Once I have an update on this issue, I will update this thread.  In the meantime, I recommend trying the other map configuration options for customizing the large map.

Re: Managing a large network map

The development team is still working to fully isolate the issue; however, we have a new release launching next week.  The resolution will end up in the release after this upcoming release.  You should still be able to use this feature for switches and and many routers.

In the next release, we are also providing a Customizing Maps PDF that combines several map customization options into an conventient document.  If you need more assistance with customizing your maps, please let me know.

    Hi,

You made mention of a Customizing Maps PDF file.  Can you provide me a link to it.  When I get a map set, there is tons of white space left, that when I send the output to a plotter to print in E Size, results in page after page of nothing but wasted paper, and one small area of map.
