    Cpu Load/Free Memory/Disk Space/etc through wmi?

Is it possible to monitor overall CPU load/Free Memory/Disk Space/etc through WMI?   This install is at an army base, and the only snmp allowed is version 3 and for the life of me I can't seem to get net-snmp configured to monitor these.

It's not currently possibly with Orion or APM to monitor the overall CPU/Memory or any disk space information using WMI or SNMP. You might want to take a look at installing SNMP Informant on your servers, which will make then accessible via SNMPv3. Then you can use Orion to monitor these performance metrics. No APM needed.

I'll look, I was hoping to not have to install/purchase anything else.  It looks like informant requires nudesign or some other snmpv3 agent to work, I'll have to see if I can get it to work with net-snmp.

You are correct but $20.00 for NuDesign's SNMP Agent might be worth it in the end. Good luck.

It took 6 months to get permission to run solarwinds, and 3 to purchase it.   I really don't want to have to go through all the hoops again to get approval/testing of another package.

I guess maybe I don't understand the question.

Orion/APM monitors disk/volume space via SNMPv3 just fine.  Start the System Manager, add a new host, check the node type as SNMPv3, put in your authentication information.  That's all there is to it.

To note one thing, of course in Windows there is no SNMPv3 agent...it is only SNMPv1 and 2.  But every other OS that comes with a SNMPv3 agent by default works fine through Orion to be monitored.  I use SNMPv3 for monitoring Red Hat Linux machines.

WMI is only available through APM, and only for monitoring services at this point if I'm not mistaken.

Well I was hoping that solarwinds had compiled net-snmp for windows to use the winExtDll and added a template to use it.   Being at an Army site, I could download this from them, and run it as part of orion that is already approved for use on our systems.   If I have to get it elsewhere, I have to go through 6 months worth of testing/approval before I can use it.    I was really hoping someone would come back with oh, yes, they have a precompiled version of winextdll available at solarwinds, or a method of getting more information from wmi was coming soon.

    Hello,

I too am at an Army installation, and am looking for a way to monitor CPU, Memory, and Disk Space on Windows systems. Did you ever find a way to do this with SolarWinds? I have APM with SP4 installed, but I do not see a way to do this via WMI. As far as the SNMP v3 agent sugestion goes, I am unaware of an Army approved SNMP v3 agent.

APM 2.0 will have script monitors that will allow you to collect data from Linux and Unix machines use of SNMP.  You'll just need an SSH connection.  We will provide some scripts out of the box.  You will also be able to leverage Nagios scripts, which should give you a substantial library to choose from.

Any idea when 2.0 is going to be released?   Will windows nagios scripts work also?   It's to bad wmi isn't fully supported, being on an army network, snmpv3 isn't allowed on windows machines, not being able to monitor disk, cpu, memory on the windows systems greatly limits the usefullness of the tool.

    Yes, but I can't tell you.  :-)

No.  the windows nagios scripts require the nagios agent.

APM 2.0 will allow you to monitor any WMI performance counter, so I'd call that full support.

    Re: Cpu Load/Free Memory/Disk Space/etc through wmi?

I have APM 2.0 installed (very nice), but I still have not been able to figure out how to monitor disk space. There are a lot of counters available for diske queues and what not, but I do not see anything related specifically to free space available on "x" partition. Is this doable, or am I just overlooking it?

Go to the AppBuilder and do a WMI Performance Counter Monitor.  From their, you can browse to your server and find the WMI counters on a target machine.  I think the one you're looking for is Logical Disk and % Free Space.

    Re: Cpu Load/Free Memory/Disk Space/etc through wmi?

Thanks Denny, I think I have it now. There are two other items that I have questions about. First is the settings for Statistic Warning Threshold and Statistic Critical Threshold. Both state "Assigns warning status to the component if the statistic value equals or
exceeds this threshold", but since I am looking at % of free disk space, lower numbers are bad, not higher numbers. If I want to set the warning for 25% free disk space and the critical threshold at 10% free disk space, how can I do that? I entered 25.00 and 10.00 into the respected fields, but the way these work, I am always getting Warnings as my current 94% is greater than 10%. Is there a way around this? Secondly, is there a document available that describes how to use Orion to send out alerts based on APM events? I found a little bit of info in the Admin Guide, but not enough to understand what I am trying to do. For example, I would like an email alert to be sent to me when my % free monior hits both the critical and warning levels.

It's still not working, my database is 45gigs, they make us keep logs for a year, we generate a bunch of logs.   I keep getting time outs in different places.  I have been hopeful if I keep running it, it might make it through at some point.  It seems to be getting through more and more each time it's run.   I opened a ticket, but they haven't gotten back yet.
