Hi all,
I get some strange result while testing LanSurveyor on a lab network.
I have two VLans on a 3750 cisco device. When I run a discovery with my two IP ranges (vlan 6 -> 6.1 to 6.254 and vlan 60 -> 60.1 to 60.254)
It creates one dark line called sw3750-1 Ports and all my devices connected to that line and two lines for each IP ranges but without devices. Devices shouldn't be connected to their IP range?
Strange too, my mapped port for each device are not the good one, for example, I have a machine connected on port 14: FA 0/14 (port confirmed manually, by Switch port mapper from Solarwind tookit and two another switch port mapper) and on the map, the port is called "Port 1/16". It is the same for all devices connected to the 3750. That problem didn't appear on my prod network with 3500 cisco devices. All ports are the goods with FA 0/x ... This problem appear with "Use switch port index rather than network interface name" checked or not.
And another question about the map:
When I have my map, I move some networks, devices, etc... but when I applied some filter (for example to see only level 1, 2 or 3), it didn't keep my moves and it is a little bit problematic for me.Thanks and best regards,
Arcastor
Hi Arcastor,
Regarding the dark line labeled "sw3750-1 Ports", this type of line will be present for every managed switch that LANsurveyor finds and will be connected to its switch. That line is used to attach any device attached to a port on that switch. LANsurveyor creates those lines so that big switches with lots of attached devices won't have to crowd all the connections to the small switch icon but rather to the line which can be stretched to accommodate large numbers of devices. It makes the maps easier to read.
As for the devices connected to those switch lines rather than their subnets, if LANsurveyor can map a device to a switch port (Layer 2 mapping), then it connects it to the switch line rather than the subnet. If no mapping can be made to a switch port, then LANsurveyor connects it to the corresponding subnet (Layer 3). If you would rather not have the Layer 2 mapping done but rather have all devices connected to their corresponding IP subnet, select Tools>Options>Miscellaneous and uncheck the "Map switch/hub ports" option. Then discover a new map.
Regarding the 3750 port labels, without seeing more data, I can't comment on the label assignment. Please open a SolarWinds support ticket. By looking at a log file and the map, we can answer your question.
Finally, yes: when switching between levels, a full map re-layout is done so any manual changes you've made will be lost. We'd like to add the capability to retain inter-level movements in the next revision of LANsurveyor. There is a possible work-around however: if you just want to briefly change from, for example Level 3 to Level 2 then back to Level 3, you should click the Level 2 button and when you're finished with Level 2, use Edit>Undo Level Change. By using Undo, you'll immediately be returned to Level 3 and your Level 3 edits will be retained.
