I am finding it difficult to present the NetFlow data by BGP ASN even thought the routers are configured to export the data...

In the document below is describes enabling the BGP AS

 http://www.solarwinds.com/support/Netflow/docs/OrionNetFlowSwitches.pdf

  1. Select origin-as to direct NetFlow to determine the origin BGP autonomous system of both the source and the destination hosts of the flow, as in:

ip flow-export version 5 origin-as

Select peer-as to direct NetFlow to determine the peer BGP autonomous system of both the input and output interfaces of the flow, as in:

ip flow-export version 5 peer-as

So my question is where do I find this in the NTA system?  I can't seem to find a report that will use it, nor can I create one with the BGP AS as an element...  What am I missing?

When I try and search in the Endpoints or Applications charting section, the BGP ASN is not an option...

Thanks,

-Corey

could be wrong, but I don't think NTA actually shows the AS numbers anywhere. I know other tools do, so one for the feature request list I think

You are correct. NTA 3.0 does not show BGP or  AS' but I will add this to the roadmap.

Thanks very much.  I think it will mean we can get by without creating hundreds of subnets and still be able to use the AS as a subnet/remote site grouping for MPLS...

It should be a great improvement in usability for us...

Hi Andy,

We are currently evaluating your products and was wondering if there was any update on this particular feature?

I sent an e-mail to sales but I haven't received a response as of yet.

Thanks.

It is on the roadmap.

What would you want to see and where would you expect to see it?

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the response. Basically I want to be able to filter results by AS number. This will enable me to basically see how much traffic I push to which networks (100Mbps to AS1, 20Mbps to AS2 et cetera), this will enable me to see top talkers, thus workout what networks our traffic is destined for. It will be similar type of stats to what you have already (countries, protocols et cetera), just for AS numbers. It would be in the pages where all the existing netflow graphs are displayed.

Thanks again.

Paul

Would a table of AS to AS traffic work? Would you want to see this for the whole network (on the summary view) or would you want it at the Node level (Node view)?

Hi Andy,

An AS to AS table of "top talkers" with history is fine (i.e. top 10 or whatever so I can see our AS and where traffic is destined).

A summary view would be sufficient. In reality we need to analyse it as a whole network anyway (at the moment in time). In the future it would be nice to do it on a "node" basis but at this moment we are working "network wide".

Thanks.

Any update as to where this is in the pipeline? NTA 3.5 was released since the last posting in this thread. I'm looking to optimize my routes based on traffic flow using NTA but without AS numbers it's more than a little difficult.

This is definitely on our radar.   I'll update the what we're working on list soon (after 3.6 gets closer to release), but I've heard this enough to raise the priority.

Having said that, if others are interested in BGP AS information in views, please chime in so we can include you in prototype reviews and demos.

Thanks!

We're currently an Orion NPM & NCM user, and I'm currently looking at NetFlow collectors, but there's no way I'd be able to justify purchasing NTA without having by-asn support.
