How to Install Orion Information Service to a XP Computer

I'm evaluating the new EOC program and since we have NPM on XP computers (don't ask me why XP) I can't find an install for the Orion Information Service required to monitor them from the EOC.  Can you provide me a stand alone install for that service?

    Thanks.

I don't think that will work but you should open a ticket even if you are -pre-sales to have an SE assist with your scenario-

You must be running at least Orion 8.5.1 SP3.  If you run the EOC installer on the Orion 8.5.1 server, it will offer you the option of just installing the Information Service.  We do not officially support NPM on XP, so we haven't tested it.  It may or may not work.  On Windows 2003, it defnitely works.

I did try that but, I cannot run the EOC installer on XP it says it can only be installed on Server 2003.

I knew we didn't test it, but I couldn't remember whether we blocked.  And obviously we blocked it.  There's not going to be a way around it.  If you want to trial it, you could download an evaluation version of NPM v9 and do it that way.  If you want to deploy it, you'll have to upgrade your NPM to v9.  We don't support XP there, but we don't block it either.

Re: How to Install Orion Information Service to a XP Computer

I'm sorry to say that if Orion doesn't want to support NPMs on XP then we will not be able to take advantage of the EOC.  We have many NPMs (over 20) deployed on XP computer and because of how NPM v7.7 was tested and implanted in our environment we will not be able to change the platform anytime soon.  We are still waiting for our security people to give us the go ahead to install v8.5.1 and that has been in the works since it was released (it was low priority to them I guess).  So long story short upgrading to v9 and Server 2003 for the NPM's is not an option for us right now.

How does the Orion Information Service work?  Doesn't it just give it the ability to poll the NPM database?  I'm surprised that it wasn't testing to be backwards compatible.  I can't be the only one using XP (even if it was a poor choice, not my decision BTW) for their NPM platform.

    Thank you for the help.

The information service contains a lot of knowledge about the shape of the Orion database, which is quite different between 7.x and 8.5.  Backward compatibility to 7.x was not an option.

Wow - that's unbelievable that any company would run Enterprise NPM software on a desktop OS?!?
I realize it was not your decision, but your security people must have their heads up their butts if they think running software like this on XP is as secure as a Server OS like Win2k3.

I wouldn't be surprised if you are the only company running NPM on XP.
Run away, as fast as you can.....

I concur on most of your comments, except.....you can lock down XP to be more secure than Win2k3 if you know what your doing.

Thanks for the laugh this morning.  : )
