Since the upgrade to 8.5.1, the SolarWinds.Net event log for the AlteringEngine shows the following error every five seconds:
2007-12-24 08:19:55,250 [MainTaskThread] ERROR All - Error in SetupMainDBConnection System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.Unprepare(Boolean isClosing) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnectionTds.ClearPreparedCommands() at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.CloseConnection(DbConnection owningObject, DbConnectionFactory connectionFactory) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.Close() at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.Dispose(Boolean disposing) at System.ComponentModel.Component.Dispose() at AlertingEngine.SWAlertingEngine.SetupMainDBConnection()
Does anyone know how to resolve this?
Have you installed SP2 for 8.5.1?
The person who works with me indicated that he had; however, I cannot confirm as he is off this week. Is there a way I can tell, maybe by a dll version, date or something?
If you're unsure no harm can come from reapplying the service pack.
Unfortunately, to do this, I would have to wait until next month during our maintenance window, as it would affect our customers. But thank you for the tip.
We are having this same issue. Open ticket for (2) months without resolution see...

Thanks for the link. I wish I would have found that thread prior to posting. I couldn't find anything for some reason.
That is exactly what is going on with our system. I do want to say one thing, the issue (in our case) doesn't have anything to do with Advanced Alerts, since we do not have any configured or active. The person that works for me did tell me weeks ago that he submitted a ticket to support and has not heard anything back. I didn't believe him, which I feel like an idiot now, because I figured they would at least send a notice every couple of weeks stating that they are still working on the issue.
We are planning to release a fix for this problem. It's still in testing, so I don't have a good ETA.
Thank you for the response!
Just as an update, I did not apply the latest service pack, yet on Saturday, when I took down the server and brought it back up, the AlertingEngine Events stopped and have not yet come back.
